The contributions of all three Villarreal players contibuted to the fantastic win
by Spain in Euro 2008.
Marcos Senna was descibed in one paper as Spain's enforcer,he can pass as well
as power his way through a game.
Joan Capdevila ensured that many attacks of the opposition broke down with his
timely tackles.
Santi Cazorla scored one of the penalties against Italy that helped the team win
through to the semi-finals.
CAPDVILA IS SPAIN'S LEADING GOALSCORER OVER THE PAST NINE MONTHS!
He scored against Sweden in a Qualifier on November 17th and 3 months later
scored the only goal against France in a friendly.
Cazorla won his first cap against Peru and Capdevila scored again.

A wonder strike from Marcos Senna wins the match after he struck
the ball from just inside the halfway line to catch the Betis keeper of
his goalline. A deserved three points to keep Villarreal in second place
and automatic qualification into the Champions League.
With four games to go it will be a challenge to keep Barcelona in third place
but it can be done.

SEVILLA 2 0 VILLARREAL
Not a good result for the Subs!
It was not a great game for Villarreal with no goals and a player sent off.
An early goal from Fabiano, top goalscorer in La Liga, did not help to settle
the Subs and Sevilla looked very threatening every time they came near to the
goal. The defence were kept busy and Diego Lopez helped keep the scoreline down.
I'm glad to see he has signed a two year extension to his contract and will stay with
the club until 30th June 2014. He has had a great season playing a key role in the rise
to SECOND place.
A penalty in the second half finished any chance of a draw and the sending of Capdevila
was a farce. Things can only improve.

CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?
A magnificent win moves the Subs into SECOND place.
Nihat, Rossi, Cazorla, Pires, Senna, Javi Venta, Capdevila,
Eguren, Gonzalo Rodriguez,Godin and Diego Lopez as well as the
substitutes Bruno, Cani and Mati Fernandez all deserve a mention for
keeping Athletico at bay. This was a superb win over a team who had been on
a roll and could have passed Villarreal in the table.
Rossi placed a cross in the box which came of Perea and Cazorla scored with a
neat shot. The second scored by Nihat was from another cross by Rossi.
2--0 at halftime
Athletico were nowhere to be seen in the second half and an angled shot from
Nihat and his second goal of the game meant the points were safe.
A fantastic acheivement and now bring on Sevilla!!

A WIN FOR THE SUBS
When the team needed to keep the ball rolling they were up
for the challenge.
A magnificent shot from the deadly Nihat made it 1-0. He controlled a long ball
from Marcos Senna and shot past Cesar into the back of the net.
Capdevila was involved in the goals again only this time he won a penalty
after being fouled in the area. Rossi had only been on the pitch for
a couple of minutes and scored from the penalty spot to make it 2-0 to the subs.
A great result for the Yellow Submarine and it keeps them in third place just two
points behind 2nd placed Barcelona.

THIS WAS THE RESULT WE NEEDED AND DESERVED
Villarreal were in a winning mood at the Camp Nou and came away with a deserved victory.
The Yellow Submarine has consolidated third place and increased the gap between
themselves and Athletico and Racing to six points.
Guille Franco raced into the penalty area only to be brought down by Victor Valdes.
The captain Marcos Senna took the penalty and Villarreal were in front after 31
minutes played.
Then an equaliser from Xavi put the game into the melting pot again but after
Tomasson came on the Subs scored in the 80th minute.
A fierce Nihat freekick was deflected by the goalkeeper and Senna rushed in to put
the ball in the net but it was wrongly ruled for offside. He was clearly onside and it
should have been a third goal for Villarreal.
The team were on good form with some lovely slick passing and thoroughly deserved
the victory.

Villarreal have 24 wins from 38 games and a points tally of 77.

THE DREAM IS OVER
The lack of an away goal brought disaster to this campaign.
The Yellows set out to get an early goal which would have
eased the pressure but when Zenit got an away goal the
dream was slipping away.
Even though the Russians went down to nine players the
Subs could not find that elusive third goal and are out of
the cup.
All the emphasis should now go to win that 3rd spot in
La Liga.

As I feared Villarreal come away with nothing from this tie.
Pogrebnyak scored the winner in the 63rd minute after a
goalkeeping error from Lopez. He came out feet first to clear
a through ball from Arshavin but missed his kick and Pogrebnyak
had a simple tap in into an empty net.
Cani and Capdevila both picked up yellow cards.
The return leg is now more difficult with the Subs needing to score
two goals and not concede anything.
Zenit remain unbeaten in their last 22 home games in European
competition. ZENIT WIN THE UEFA CUP
Villarreal have won three of their four away games in the UEFA Cup
this season, scoring twice in each game.
This will be their first meeting in UEFA club competition.

GREAT NEWS-- Robert Pires has extended his contract for another year
and will be ruling the midfield for the Subs.
I had the privilege of seeing him being intoduced at the beginning
of July 2006 and having photos taken and a signing for me.
A real gentleman, friendly and certainly an asset to the club which has
been shown on the field.

- VILLARREAL MISS OUT ON SEMI-FINAL PLACE
. It was a difficult night for the Subs after going a goal down in the 41st minute and having
Cygan sent of for two yellow card offences.
The efforts of all the team were not rewarded with a game against Valencia in the Semis.
But yes we can be proud of the players who gave their all to try and turn it around and
special mention must be made of DIEGO LOPEZ who was magnificent in goal. The number
13 was certainly not unlucky and made a great save from Messi's penalty.
We can only speculate what might have been if NIHAT had been on the pitch!
The inability to score was ultimately the downfall of the side and a goal at home in the first
leg would have made all the difference.
Villarreal had already beaten Barca 3-1 at home this season.
Of the other teams left in the cup Villarreal have already beaten Valencia 0-3 away,
Racing Santander 0-2 away and Getafe 1-3 away.

Villarreal will want to make up for an uneventful last season in Europe .
The form of NIhat and Robert Pires has given an impetus to the first half of this season coupled with some outstanding displays by Rossi. In fact the defence need to improve. "The Yellow Submarine" is sailing on!
It has been good to see the contributions made by Matias Fernandez, Cani and Jon Dahl Tomasson.
What a brilliant signing Rossi has been and the best is yet to come. His injury has come at a bad time. I have no doubt that Villarreal will win a La Liga title soon because of the desire of the President, Manager and Players. There are some exciting new signings already this season and with their help that title will be closer than we think.
